The NHL plans to start in late July or early August. The playoffs are expanded from 16 teams to 24 teams with a view to "Play-in". This means that seven out of 31 teams are not allowed to participate.

Tonight the NHL held its draft lottery. It ended unexpectedly, and aroused strong reactions.

"A big failure"

None of the seven teams missing the playoffs this fall got the first choice.

- Tonight it would only have been about the seven teams that are not in the playoffs. This is how you should do it. It is the team that needs the most help, the best players. This result is nothing but scandalous, says Sportsnet's expert Brian Burke, former general manager of several NHL clubs, after the lottery.

- It's a big failure.

"A unique year"

According to Sportsnet, this is the first time this has happened.

- It's a unique year. This means that we have a unique draft lottery, says Bill Daly, the league's deputy commissioner, according to TSN.

Which team gets the first choice becomes clear after "Play-in". The eight teams that lose there make up the first pick, according to the NHL.
