The FBI confirmed Tuesday that the noose-shaped noose found on the door of NASCAR driver Bubba Wallace's garage at the Talladega Superspeedway had already been there since last fall, so it closed its investigation for an alleged hate crime.

"The FBI report concludes, and photographic evidence confirms, that the rope-shaped rope on the garage door had been put there since the beginning of last fall," NASCAR itself said in a statement.

Both also indicated that the rope had been in 2019 "in garage number 4" and that "no one could have known that Mr. Wallace would be assigned garage number 4 last week."
