The snare was discovered in Wallace's garage when drivers returned there after Sunday's race in Talladega, Alabama, was postponed due to rain. The race would have been the first to run in front of the crowd after Nascar banned the Southern State flag from all races.

Wallace himself writes on Twitter that "this is a heinous racist and hate-filled act that makes me incredibly sad and is a painful reminder of how long we have to go as a society". He writes that in recent weeks he has been met with support from all over Nascar and that he will not be intimidated by those whom we spread hatred.

"As my mom told me today, 'they're just trying to scare you.' This will not hurt me, I will not give up, I will continue to be proud of who I am. "

The race that was postponed should be run on Monday evening, Swedish time.
