It was last Friday that 53-year-old Zanardi crashed with a truck in a downhill when he was racing in paracycling (you sit low and pull your arms out). The Italian suffered severe head injuries and was taken by ambulance helicopter to a hospital in Siena where he is treated with a respirator.

The doctors note that as long as the vital organs remain stable, the more chance Zanardi has of coping with the situation where the situation is serious but stable.

On Sunday, a new communiqué came about Zanardi, who was a successful racing driver with, among other things, a couple of seasons in F1 before he happened to suffer a serious crash in the Cart series and lost both legs almost 20 years ago.

May have suffered brain damage

"We cannot rule out that complications can be caused," the doctors say in the update from Santa Maria alle Scotte Hospital in Siena, Tuscany, AP reports.

Doctors also warn that the severe facial and skull injuries may have caused brain damage.

Zanardi is a great profile and role model in both the motor and parasport world after the tough crash in 2001 where both legs were amputated above the knees and the heart stopped seven times after losing all blood except a liter in his body. He switched careers and took four gold in paracycling in 2012 and 2016.
