Niki Terpsta was seriously injured when he was out on a training tour between Enkhuizen and Lelystad in the Netherlands.

The news agency states that Terpsta and some other cyclists were behind a moped when several geese appeared on the road. Terpsta was forced to give way and drove into a rock and ended up on the side of the road. NOS writes that he punctured a lung, got a concussion and broke the ribs.

"No life-threatening injuries"

He was taken to hospital by helicopter.

- Niki injured himself today during a training session. He is in the hospital and will stay there for a few days. He has no life-threatening injuries, but will need time to recover, says Niki Terpsta's wife, Ramona, according to VeloNews.

Today, Terpsta's team announced that he will remain in the intensive care unit, but will leave the hospital in a few days. According to the team doctor, he will be gone for ten to twelve weeks.

The 36-year-old cyclist has won classic Paris-Roubaix and Tour of Flanders.
