The resumption of the Football Championship in camera on Friday is disrupted in Romania by infections with the new coronavirus in two clubs, announced the Professional League (LPF). "We all want football to return to the stadiums, but the health of the players is paramount," said Justin Stefan, an LPF official, quoted by the Romanian media on Friday.

FC Botosani was scheduled to play on the move to Craiova (south) on Friday evening, opening this first day after the forced break. But the team doctor tested positive for the new coronavirus.

All club members have therefore been tested and must submit to a quarantine, pending the results.

Other matches should still take place

"I fear the season will not start again," said Valeriu Iftimie, the boss of FC Botosani, summing up the anguish in the football world with eight days left in the second phase of the championship.

For its part, Dinamo Bucharest saw its match against Chindia Targoviste scheduled for Saturday also be postponed, after the discovery of a case of contamination this time among club staff.

Last week, the government authorized a resumption of the championship in camera on Friday, after a three-month hiatus. If new contaminations are not discovered by then, other matches will take place this weekend.

Romania on Friday recorded more than 21,000 cases of new coronavirus and 1,369 deaths linked to the pandemic.
