During the day, the US Football Federation will take a position on the wording to
"stand respectfully during the playing of the national anthem", which is a controversial and newly introduced wording in the regulations.

The squat has become a symbol for fighting police violence and racism after George Floyd, buried today in Houston, died in connection with a Minneapolis police raid two weeks ago.

"The union should immediately rescind the 'national anthem policy', publishing a statement acknowledging that the policy was wrong when it was adopted and apologizing to our black players and supporters," writes the American women's team, which believes the union should investigate itself.

"Furthermore, we believe that the union should describe its plans for the hurdle will now support the message and the movement that it attempted four years ago."

The police came to 2017 after superstar Megan Rapinoe got down on one knee before an international match against Thailand the year before, Reuters writes.

The act of the knee-jerk protest became familiar with American footballer Colin Kaepernick 2016. Last week, the NFL leadership apologized for not listening to the protests four years ago. 

The US won the World Cup in France last year.
