Manchester City player Raheem Sterling called for more black coaches to be included in the absence of black representation in the football hierarchy.

The English footballer has vindicated these days the protests around the world against racism after the death of the American citizen George Floyd at the hands of the police. "In the Premier League there are about 500 players and a third of them are black, but we do not have representation in the hierarchy or in the technical bodies," Sterling explained on the British channel BBC.

The footballer gave as an example the cases of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Sol Campbell and Ashley Cole. "I will give you an example. There is Gerrard as coach of Rangers, Lampard as coach of Chelsea, but then there are Sol Campbells and Ashley Cole. They all had great careers and played for England," said Sterling.

"They have got their coaching cards to direct at the highest level, but two of them have not given them the same opportunities and both are black. I think that is what is missing here," he said.

"This is not just about kneeling down (alluding to the gesture of American football player Colin Kaepernick who has become a symbol of the fight against racism), you also have to give people the opportunities they deserve," Sterling added.
