UEFA will decide on June 17 what to do with the Champions League. With the major European leagues returning little by little, everything indicates that both the Champions League and the Europa League will be played in August, but there are still major issues to be defined.

The first, the format. Although the organism's intention is to maintain the usual and resume the tournament where it was left (with half of the second round matches still to be disputed), it has not ruled out the option of playing everything in the same venue and a single match to limit the travel around the continent. The second, the venue of the final (or of that tournament) once Istanbul, the designated city, has already communicated that it prefers not to host it by not going to recover the investment necessary to organize it. That's where Madrid and Atlético enter.

Miguel Ángel Gil, CEO of the club, decided to take up the initiative again, with the support of the Mayor, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, a well-known rojiblanco fan. It must be remembered that the Metropolitan is not a municipal field, so it must always be Atlético who requests the request from UEFA and the hypothetical recipient of the money assigned to the host.

"One of the epicenters of the pandemic"

Martínez-Almeida, who recognized this morning that "there are steps to celebrate the Champions League in Madrid, which would be a message to the world that this city is back." With the Santiago Bernabéu under construction, the stadium would be the Wanda Metropolitano, where Liverpool already lifted the trophy on June 1, 2019. With Atlético in quarters, after eliminating the champion, the appeal of a final at home is evident to the mattress club.

However, the entity itself is pessimistic with its possibilities. "It is true that there have been conversations with UEFA and the City Council supports it, but Madrid has been one of the epicenters of the pandemic worldwide and that means that it is not the city with more possibilities," Rojiblancas sources explain to this newspaper.

However, the favorite city for the highest body of continental football is not Madrid, but Lisbon. Portugal, one of the countries that has best managed the Covid-19 pandemic, offers a feeling of security superior to any other venue. Interestingly, six years after that 2014 final, Lisbon once again crossed paths with Atlético.
