Emirati rider Abdul Aziz Bin Faisal Al Qasimi has been suspended for 20 years, the most severe sanction in equestrian history, for doping his horse, which suffered a serious injury for which it had to be euthanized.

The Court of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has explained that the horse, Castlebar Contraband, had to be euthanized after suffering an open fracture in the bone of the right canon during a competition in France in 2016.

The autopsy revealed that the horse had received injections of Yilazina , a product used as a sedative, pain reliever, and muscle relaxant, which is prohibited in competition.

FEI veterinarian Göran Åkerström said the substance multiplied the risk of catastrophic injury in the horse, which had been desensitized both in training and in competition.

The lack of sensitivity, coupled with osteoarthritis in the right front joint, resulted in stress fractures that ended in the catastrophic injury of the horse.

Al Qasimi's lawyers alleged that Xylazine had been used in the euthanasia process , but the FEI court rejected the argument and instead upheld those of the vet.

Consequently, the rider has been suspended for 18 years for mistreatment of the horse and two more for violating the regulation on medication for equines. In addition, you will have to pay a fine of 29,500 euros , plus another 13,800 in court costs.
