According to press reports today, Sunday, the Portuguese capital, Lisbon, is close to hosting the quarter-finals of the currently suspended version of the Champions League.
According to the website of the German newspaper "Bild", Lisbon surpassed other candidate cities, most notably Frankfurt, Moscow and Istanbul.
"Bild" pointed out that Portugal was one of the least affected countries by the Corona virus crisis in Europe and that this factor contributed greatly to its superiority over other cities on the way towards receiving the quarter-finals of the continental championship.
Lisbon owns several stadiums ready to host matches, which 16 years ago hosted the Euro 2004 tournament.
The European Football Association (UEFA) may resort to complete the return matches in the sixteen rounds, which were not due to the Corona pandemic, before the quarter-finals and the Golden Square were held from one confrontation and not the home and away matches as usual.
