Two Lisbon Benfica players were injured Thursday night after the team bus was stoned after the championship match against Tondela, the Lisbon club announced on Friday. German international Julian Weigl and Serbian international Andrija Zivkovic "were taken as a precaution to the hospital to be because of the splinters that affected them," the club said in a statement posted on its website.

"The Benfica coach was attacked by stone jets when it left the A2 motorway towards the club's training center in Seixal" after leaving the Luz stadium, the club said, asking the authorities " to identify ”the perpetrators of“ these criminal acts ”.

League condemns "cowardly attack"

After three months of stoppage due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Portuguese championship resumed behind closed doors Wednesday evening. Twenty-four hours after FC Porto, who lost to Famalicao (2-1), Benfica returned to competition on Thursday evening. The club, which drew 0-0 against Tondela, regained the lead, tied on points with Porto, on match day 25.

The Portuguese football league condemned "a cowardly attack" against the Benfica team, which occurred "at a time when Portuguese football has joined forces to resume an activity that thrills millions of people".
