The methods of relaunching football are becoming more precise in Italy. The Italian federation (FIGC) announced on Wednesday May 21 that the season will be extended until August 20, with the hope of concluding all professional championships. "The FIGC has expressed its desire to relaunch and end national professional competitions by setting August 20 as the deadline for the end of Serie A, B and C competitions", that is to say the three first male divisions, writes the federation in a statement. The start of the next season has been set for September 1.

All the championships were interrupted in Italy on March 9 in the face of the progression of the Covid-19 epidemic. On Tuesday, the government approved the resumption of collective training for professional football clubs. Serie A could resume around mid-June.

Promotions and relegations maintained

In its press release of Wednesday, the federation specifies that it will fix before the resumption of the championships of the rules applicable in the event of new suspension related to the coronavirus. In this case, the federation envisages "brief phases of playoff and playout in order to define the result of the competitions, as well as promotions and relegations".

The federation will also establish rules in the event of definitive interruption of the current season, "which will in all cases provide for relegation and promotions".

The FIGC, on the other hand, has put an end to all its amateur championships, including the female ones up to Serie B. As regards the first female division, a decision will be made "in the coming days" as to a possible resumption.
