The clubs of Ligue 2 denounced Tuesday by the voice of their majority union the "contempt" of certain counterparts of Ligue 1 on the question of TV rights, on the eve of the general assembly of the League, crucial moment of the end of season.

"The college of Ligue 1 (bringing together the presidents of the 20 elite clubs) completely despised Ligue 2", was indignant with AFP Claude Michy, the president of the Union of professional football clubs ( UCPF), the union of the vast majority of second division clubs.

A pending uncapping request

Object of the anger of the leader, the distribution of television rights between the elite and his anteroom, item on the agenda of the general meeting of the Professional Football League (LFP) on Wednesday (15:00).

The L2, unanimously, had in fact made a request to cap its annual TV rights, currently capped at 110 million euros per year, to receive a fixed percentage of 12.4%, or 162 million annual euros as part of the attractive new 2020-2024 cycle contract (1.217 billion euros per year, including 64 million for the L2, three times more than the previous contract).

Boycott?

Problem, the unanimity of the general assembly - and therefore all the votes of the elite - is required to validate this uncapping. However, according to Claude Michy, "eleven L1 clubs voted for the uncapping, which means that we have 31 clubs out of 40 (counting the 20 L2 teams) who agree for solidarity, a common life, to develop football in a fair and balanced way ".

"A certain number of people are totally opposed to it because they need money for their club which is not very well managed", further railed the president of the UCPF, conceding that certain leaders of Ligue 2, "very irritated and very angry ”had raised the possibility of boycotting the general assembly of Wednesday.

This would "show total disagreement" and jeopardize the other decisions on the agenda. Like that relating to the terms of the loan guaranteed by the State of 224.5 million euros contracted by the League, essential to the treasuries of the big stables of the elite.

To convince their L1 counterparts to vote on the cap, the L2 stables also undertook in exchange to promise more power to L1 leaders in the forums, via future governance reforms. But the calendar mismatch between the uncapping of TV rights and the reform of governance, which has not really been launched, seems to have complicated the negotiations.
