Let's start with Carlos Sainz , who is not the father, but simply Carlos Sainz. The son is the one who will race in Ferrari, in Formula 1. Last week, a selection process was concluded among hundreds of thousands of fans from all over the world. They were looking for the best rally driver of all time, and Carlos Sainz beat nine-time world champion Sebastien Loeb in the final .

For me, the result of that election was very fair and adequate for the reasons that I will explain below. You will wonder how a pilot who has only twice been world champion against another who has been nine! Can win this recognition. And the answer is simple, because the best of all time was sought, not the fastest, nor the one who has won the title the most times. It was not looking for a record of objective results, it went a little further.

In the world of rallies there are two very different times, until Carlos Sainz and later. He was the first driver capable of winning on all surfaces: on asphalt, on land, in Africa, on snow, secret rallies ... Whatever. Until it appeared, the Latino riders were the best on tarmac and the Nordics on dirt and snow. Carlos eliminated stereotypes. He also changed work habits, imposing on all the technical personnel of the teams the same level of effort that he demanded of himself. It is also true that, since his first World Cup contract, he managed to get the World Cup drivers' fees up.

Race of winners

I must admit that for years I have had a private joke with Carlos and his son about whether the correct order to introduce them was: "the father of the F1 driver", or "the son of the rally driver". The truth is that young Carlos solved the joke after his father's second Dakar victory: "Joaquín, I think I must be the son of the rally driver again, don't you think?" He asked me. Today is the day to congratulate both of you. Carlos Jr., along with Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc , are - in my opinion - the three best young riders in the Grand Circus. There are other important values, but these three have a plus over the others, even over those who are even younger than they are.

For me, both Carlos and Charles, that is, the future couple of Ferrari, have -both- more quality than the Dutch. Also more mettle, calm, intelligence, the same speed and much more sportsmanship. In short, they are two potential world champions if their car allowed them to win races.

The questions everyone asks: Is Carlos going to win races in 2021 with the Ferrari? The answer is easy: if the car can be in a position to win them, the driver will surely know how to lead it to victory. Will they let him defeat Leclerc at Ferrari? I can't answer this question, because I don't know. It will not be easy, but it will not be impossible either.

And another note to finish. If next year the McLaren were faster than the Ferrari , it wouldn't be because of Carlos. It would not be a mistake to have changed teams, because nobody has a crystal ball to know these things, pools cannot be done on Mondays. And, finally, because accessing Ferrari is already a goal in itself; not everyone is called to this team. Only the fact of signing is a milestone in the career of any Formula 1 driver, something that very few have been able to achieve.
