The total area of the main gymnasium and swimming pool is 396,900 square meters. The building has a silver-white metal roof and a platform design with two wings spread. From a height, it looks like a "butterfly" with two wings spread. According to reports, the design was inspired by the traditional Chinese love story of Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai.

According to the Hangzhou Asian Games Organizing Committee, the main gymnasium refers to the design of international basketball competition venues, with 18,000 seats, and the swimming pool is a standard competition type with 6,000 seats. During the game, the main gymnasium and swimming pool will host basketball, swimming, diving and other competitions.
At present, the main structure of the main gymnasium and swimming pool project is capped to achieve the overall closure of the stadium roof, 80% of the electromechanical installation of pipes and bridges is completed, and 30% of the outdoor projects are completed. The builder expects that the project will be completed by the end of this year.
According to the Hangzhou Asian Organizing Committee, after the completion of the project and before the start of the Hangzhou Asian Games, the above venues will be put into "trial", large-scale events such as concerts will be held to conduct venue stress tests to improve the venue's operation and management capabilities.
