Miguel Ors was a classic among the classics of the Spanish sports press. First by age (he died at the age of 91). Then, by experience (he entered TVE in 1957). And always for professional longevity (until, practically, the end has been writing his column in La Razón).

He could speak of the steppe Spanish sport of the 40s and 50s, concentrated in a trilogy of hardships or, simply, shortages and limitations of all kinds: soccer, cycling and boxing. And it could be extended about the later abundances, dated in origin, to place them in an economic, political and sociological framework, starting in 1992, of the Barcelona Olympic Games . His memory accessed everything, his knowledge reached everything.

He was a man of the "old guard" of journalism, raised in the school of the Pueblo newspaper of Emilio Romero. The newspaper, of which he became deputy director (also of El Imparcial), was a journalism university. University of classroom and street. A forge and a crucible where generations of "nibs" of race, rebellious against guidelines and routines, were forged. Ready, alive, vocational ... With Ors José María García and Juan Manuel Gozalo suckled in sports . Has anyone overcome them?

Ors (Miguel Ors Candela) was from Barcelona, but came to Madrid in 1947. He studied law in the old mansion on Calle de San Bernardo. But he was a journalist. He was attracted to politics and sports; and in his sporting goods both aspects were often mixed. And, yes, it was not for a lawyer, but for a journalist. And as such it was consecrated on Spanish Television, in which he remained for 35 years, first as a camera "at the foot of the track" and later presenting and directing programs such as "All sports", "Graderío", "Campeones", "Cartel "," Yesterday Sunday "," Grand Prix "," Mirador de los deporte "and" Estudio Estadio ", still a benchmark among RTVE's sports programs. Also, between 1962 and 1977, he presented sports on the Newscast.

He was news chief of the 1982 World Cup. He covered five World Cup Championships, six Summer Olympics and one Winter Olympics. Although he also stood out in the paper press and on the airwaves (Radio Peninsular, Radio Intercontinental), television, that black and white television, that two-channel television, made him enormously popular.

The anecdote with Franco

He had a great voice and resounding close-ups. I was surprised to meet him in person. Whoever expected to see a big man met someone of short stature. That happened to Franco. The Caudillo was very concerned about the performance that Prince Juan Carlos , whom he had chosen as successor , could provide at the Munich 72 Olympic Games . He feared that he would not live up to his rank, or even that, in the eyes of the world, he would make a fool of himself. And he required Ors to inform him.

Franco was surprised to see him and said: "You are very short, Ors." The journalist, as he narrated it many times in interviews (it was his favorite anecdote), replied: "I am proud to have the same height as His Excellency." But, as he told close people, the real answer was: "You too, Excellency." He instantly regretted it. The ensuing silence did not bode well. Ors blanched. But the Caudillo, probably more fun than annoying, did not take it into consideration and questioned the journalist for a long time, who assured him that the Prince would not look bad. Franco liked the candle and was reassured by the talk.

Ors was footballing for Atleti. And ideologically conservative. Very conservative. The recent Spanish policy and, in particular, the emergence of Podemos and the growth of Catalan sovereignty provoked very negative comments about the future of the country. In the last years, he took care of his wife, Margarita, who was ill. Our colleague Miguel Ors Villarejo followed, although specialized in Economics, the journalistic steps of his father, a man dedicated to his profession and for whose value he received, among other awards, the Medal of Sports Merit, the Golden Antenna and the Ondas Award.

All of us dedicated to this profession met him. Many of us admire him and we will all thank him for his kind and close treatment.
