  • Italy.Enter into 'Phase 2': "On May 18 the soccer teams may return"

The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced on Tuesday his plan of 'de-escalation' in which for the first time specific measures are contemplated for the activity of professional athletes and that includes the possibility of soccer returning behind closed doors during the month of June.

The most immediate novelty is that from next Monday, May 4, the individual training of professional and federated athletes , as well as professional clubs , is authorized .

The plan is structured in four phases, lasting two weeks each. Phase 0 will start from next Monday throughout Spain. From there, progress in the phases will depend on the evolution of each province and its health capabilities.

In this way, all Spanish provinces will enter phase 1 between May 18 and 25 (El Hierro, La Gomera, Formentera and Isla Graciosa will do so on day 4). In this stage of the 'de-escalation', the Government will authorize the "average training" in the professional leagues. Although he has not specified it, this expression must be understood as training sessions in small groups , as provided by the LaLiga protocol.

Ahead of phase 2, all outdoor events that bring together a maximum of 400 people will be allowed . In the absence of specification, this measure will allow both collective training and the dispute of games behind closed doors. In the only recent precedent, the Eibar-Real Sociedad prior to the Alarm Stadium, there were about 200 people in Ipurua.

Therefore, and provided that the evolution of the health situation does not dictate otherwise between June 1 and 15, both trainings (taking extreme hygiene and safety measures, of course) and closed-door matches would be possible. Phase 3 does not include measures that affect professional sports . For the return of football to the open door, although Sánchez has said nothing about it, we will still have to wait many months.
