Belgian championship match between Bruges and Anderlecht - ISOPIX / SIPA

Belgian football or the art of maintaining a certain suspense. While the general meeting of professional clubs was to endorse Friday the final end of the football season in Belgium because of the coronavirus pandemic, it was finally postponed to Monday.

Officially, it is to await the decisions of the government and the National Security Council scheduled for Friday, which will give an opinion on the conduct of mass competitions behind closed doors. The Pro League board of directors recommended on March 25 to end the D1 and D2 championships, an opinion deemed "premature" and "not justified" by UEFA, which then threatened to deprive Belgian clubs of European Cups next season.

The expected UEFA opinion, among others

The Belgian clubs will therefore take their final decision after the opinions of the National Security Council and also of UEFA. A meeting is planned for Wednesday between UEFA, the European Association of Clubs (ECA) and the Association of European Leagues.

Then the government of the body will meet by videoconference Thursday to "take stock of the situation and discuss the latest developments concerning the impact of the pandemic of new coronavirus on European football," said the European confederation.
