The Iraqi Football Association announced that the Al-Rafidain Lions team will participate in the tenth edition of the West Asian Football Championship for men hosted by the UAE in January next year, alongside teams: the Emirates, Jordan, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Lebanon.

"The Football Association has agreed with all of its members that Iraq will participate in this tournament, as the participation book will be sent to the West Asian Football Association," said Mohammed Khalaf, Media Director of the Football Association.

He added that "the decision to participate was made after consultation with the Slovenian coach of the national team, Srikko Katanic, who is currently in his country as a result of the outbreak of the new Corona virus (Covid-19), who welcomed the decision to participate."

The Iraqi team ranked second in the last West Asian Championship after losing in the final to its guest, Bahrain, with a clean goal in the final match that took place at the Karbala International Stadium.

The deadline set by the West Asian Confederation before the national federations under its banner to confirm the participation of its teams ends at the end of May 1.
