Last year, home player Bianca Andreescu won the tournament, which is one of the oldest in the world and has had women's singles games since 1892. A couple of weeks later, the big break came with the win at the US Open in New York.
Andreescu, currently sixth in the world rankings, has had major injury problems and had set his sights on making a comeback on the WTA tour, which is closed until July 13. The organizer, the Canadian Tennis Association, announces that it follows the recommendation of the province of Quebec which banned all sports until August 31.
The US Open is scheduled for August 31-September 13.
"Hoped it would be resolved in time"- At the beginning of the corona crisis we hoped that the situation would be resolved in time to be able to arrange the tournament according to the original schedule, but we knew that the chances were decreasing more and more in recent weeks, says tournament manager EugèneLapierre to his own website.
The Rogers Cup Men's Tournament, where Rafael Nadal is the reigning champion, with Toronto's playground is still on ATP's calendar. Toronto is located in the province of Ontario. The tournament has been played on the men's side since 1881 and is only four years younger than Wimbledon.
The Rogers Cup rotates between Toronto and Montreal where the sexes are separated. The ladies will be in Montreal again next year and the men in Toronto August 6-15, 2021.
