At last year's athletic league meeting last year, the districts voted through a new rule text on how competitions should be designed for children under 12.

One of the points that was emphasized was that athletic results should still be measured - but no longer ranked. In other words, children should still get a result on the actual race day, but no list of how they positioned themselves against other children.

Follows the same path as other sports

The new form of competition is now starting to apply during the outdoor season 2020 - and is following a trend. In football, tables and cup results for children under 13 were demolished as early as 2015, the year after the ice hockey introduced a similar rule.

But in an individual sport like athletics, where measurement and placement is the basic idea, how much effect can such a rule change actually have?

- We hope this will send a good signal about what sport stands for. Of course, whoever comes first over the finish line will still know that he or she is coming first, but what we want to do is to tone down the competition momentum, says Frida Hogstrand.
