US justice released a document on Monday accusing the World Cup organizations of 2018 (Russia) and 2022 (Qatar) of bribery. It is the first time that black and white FIFA drivers are suspected of bribery.
The Russian World Cup bid involves FIFA bobos Jack Warner from Trinidad and Tobago and Ralf Salguero from Guatemala. They would have received $ 5 and $ 1 million respectively.
The names of Argentinian Julio Grondona, Paraguayan Nicolás Leoz and Brazilian Ricardo Teixeira are mentioned as bribed FIFA members by Qatar. Of the trio, only Teixeira is still alive, but because Brazil has no extradition treaty with the US, he cannot be tried there.
The five Latin American FIFA directors have previously been convicted of, among other things, money laundering. Although there has always been a hint of bribery around the two World Cups, this has never been proven.
The organization of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups were allotted in 2010 at the same time. Russia defeated a bid from England and joint submissions from the Netherlands-Belgium and Spain-Portugal. Qatar was preferred over the United States, South Korea, Japan and Australia.
Driver TV channel FOX is also suspect
The US justice document also accuses two South American executives of TV channel FOX of bribery: Hernan Lopez and Carlos Martinez. They are suspected of having bribed South American football officials in exchange for broadcasting rights to the Copa Libertadores and the 2018 and 2022 World Cups.
It is not yet known when the lawsuits will take place in New York.
