The start of the Paris-2024 Olympic Games with the new offshore racing test: this is the proposal of the International Sailing Federation (World Sailing) which imagines the first Olympic medals awarded in Marseille on the day of the opening ceremony.

"The new series of sailing events, on the program of the Paris-2024 Olympics, offers many options," said a spokesman for World Sailing on Tuesday. The authority thus proposes to start the offshore race, a test present for the first time on the Olympic program, "two days before the opening ceremony".

The tour of Corsica

The medals would then be awarded to the winners in Marseille on the opening day of the Games. A specialty of French navigators, ocean racing, lasting three days and two nights, will be contested on a monohull, without foils, by a mixed crew of two people.

Departing from Marseille, the fleet could, if the wind is there, go around Corsica and then return to Marseille, explained Kim Andersen, Danish president of World Sailing, in May. Among the ten sailing events on the program, in addition to ocean racing, kiteboarding will also make its appearance at the JO-2024, contested in mixed doubles.

To aim for parity between men and women, the 470 dinghy will welcome a mixed double crew. Victim of this overhaul, the Finn, a dinghy present since the Helsinki Olympics in 1952, disappears from the program.
