The Royal Spanish Sailing Federation (RFEV), through its president, Julia Casanueva , has come out on the alleged irregularity of the confinement of several sailors and technicians of the Spanish Olympic team in the High Performance Center (CEAR) of Santander, in a statement published on its website.

Julia Casanueva reaffirms herself in the decision made by the RFEV: "The decision to reunite the athletes in the CEAR, instead of sending them home, with their parents or family, was the most responsible thing we could do," said the president. in the Federation statement.

"It was raised like this from the first moment because the members of the Olympic team had spent two weeks in Palma living together hundreds of sailors of different nationalities. Sending them home would have been a risk for them and their entire environment. Our job is not to ensure only the health of our athletes and their environment, but also that the virus does not spread further, as all citizens do. "

In order to isolate the athletes and due to the risk of contagion due to the series of trainings they had carried out, the RFEV proposed the possibility of placing them in preventive quarantine at the CEAR in Santander, where the team is based and where they reside. when there are no trips for competitions or training.

Most of the Olympic team accepted the measure and, voluntarily, they confined themselves to CEAR, where they cannot train, but they can work in other more technical facets of their specialty and under the monotorized supervision of the RFEV doctor, María del Carmen Vaz.

This situation was reported to the Higher Sports Council and to the authorities. The CSD informed the RFEV that it recommended its closure. The Federation replied that CEAR was closed to the public, with only the team's athletes remaining as they came from a potentially risky situation. According to the Federation, there was no subsequent response from the CSD to this statement.

Two weeks after being confined, an athlete showed some mild symptoms compatible with a respiratory tract infection, but without reaching a temperature that could be considered fever or cough, the medical condition of which resolved in a few days.

Following the official protocols, the Cantabrian Health Service was informed that it determined an isolation of two weeks for all of them. Before the extension of the state of alarm by the Covid-19, scheduled until April 26, on the 8th the quarantine was completed and until then the athletes and technicians must remain confined there.
