"Minor, player, coach, supporter ... He embodied the spirit of blood and gold par excellence," reacted RC Lens on Twitter. Born in Liévin (Pas-de-Calais) in 1931, Sowinski had coached the club between 1969 and 1978, between 1979 and 1981, then in 1988.

Under his leadership, Lens was champion of France D2 in 1973, finalist of the Coupe de France in 1975, beaten 2-0 by Saint-Etienne, and vice-champion of France in 1977.
