Wimbledon Central during the Djokovic final - Federer - SIPA

It was an open secret. It is now official. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club announced on Wednesday the cancellation of the 2020 edition of Wimbledon because of the Covid-19 coronavirus epidemic. The prestigious British grass tournament was scheduled to take place from June 29 to July 12.

Unlike Roland Garros, which has been postponed from September 20 to October 4, this is an outright cancellation. There was no question of disputing the tournament behind closed doors for the organizers, whereas Great Britain could know a confinement of several months according to the authorities. A postponement later in the season seemed impossible in particular because of its surface, the grass, difficult to play outside of the summer period.

It is with great regret that the AELTC has today decided that The Championships 2020 will be canceled due to public health concerns linked to the coronavirus epidemic.

The 134th Championships will instead be staged from 28 June to 11 July 2021.https: //t.co/c0QV2ymGAt

In addition, the financial losses could be less for Wimbledon since according to some media, the tournament would have taken its precautions by taking out insurance against pandemics several years ago already.
