The project had already been leaked in January, although it was on Monday when Aston Martin confirmed its plans to create, starting in 2021 and taking advantage of the Racing Point team structure, its own Formula 1 team. In this way, the prestigious brand British will return to the grill after six decades of absence and the Grand Circus will receive a breath of fresh air in these weeks of anguished uncertainties.

Lawrence Stroll, at the head of the conglomerate Yew Tree Consortium, managed to convince the shareholders of Aston Martin Lagonda with a capital injection of nearly 700 million euros. The investment will allow the current head of Racing Point to become the CEO of Aston Martin, thereby taking full responsibility for the ambitious project.

"A brand with so much history and pedigree must compete at the highest level in the world of motorsport," said the Canadian magnate, more than satisfied to bring to fruition negotiations that deprived him of sleep "for many nights."

Le Mans wins

Aston Martin, who in 2021 will celebrate his 100th anniversary in the world of racing, only played two seasons in Formula 1 (1959 and 1960). However, his first great success came with the triumph of Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby at the 24 Hours of Le Mans (1959). During the last seasons, the winged logo brand has stood out in the Endurance World Cup, with two wins at Le Mans in the GTE category (2014 and 2017).

"We will have more pressure and higher expectations," assumes Stroll, who also admits the need to "be competitive from the start" to overcome the results of Racing Point, the team that in 2018 took over from Force India.

However, under the leadership of Otmar Szafnauer, Racing Point was unable to match the level achieved under the command of the controversial Vijay Mallya, fourth-placed in the Constructors' World Championship in 2016 and 2017.

The cancellation of the first eight tests of the 2020 calendar has been a hard blow for Racing Point, one of the great surprises during the official preseason training. At the controls of the controversial RP20, Sergio Pérez and Lance Stroll rubbed shoulders in Montmeló with the three favorite teams for the victories.
