The Italian Football Confederation president, Gabriele Gravina, has refused to acknowledge the end of the Serie A season due to an outbreak of Coruna virus, and said the competition could extend to July and August if necessary.

Italy has seen more deaths than any other country due to the Corona virus, and the latest death figures show 7503 people infected in about a month.

The northern Lombardy region - which is the most affected so far - showed a decline in the number of new deaths and injuries in statistics on Wednesday, raising hopes that the outbreak of the virus may slow in its main focus.

But optimism is cautious, with warnings coming from the south, where infections and deaths are greatly reduced but increasing regularly.

The Italian league competition has been suspended since 9 this month, and players from several clubs have contracted the virus.

"I do not give up so easily as long as there is an opportunity, I will keep the hope of resuming the competition," Gravina said in an interview with Radio Marty.

There are still 12 rounds remaining in the league in addition to several postponed matches, and Gravina predicted that the competition would need 45 or 60 days to complete.

"If we get a month in July and August, this may be the right time," he said.

Gravina also backed a proposal earlier to set up a playoff round to determine the league champion if there was not enough time to complete the original schedule.

"I suggested this only as a lifeboat, but in the future we will work on it, and for me it is an interesting idea and I hope one day I will implement it until the Italian League gets more attention."
