European football association Uefa on Tuesday called for a crisis meeting with representatives of clubs, players and national unions, among others. The spread of the coronavirus has stopped the game in all the top leagues in Europe and it is highly unlikely that they will be decided in time for the European Championships, which is scheduled to start in Rome on June 12.

In addition, the international football association Fifa has recommended stopping all international matches in March and April, which would mean that the qualifiers for the last four European Championships cannot be played until early May.

No one knows when football in Europe can resume, but even if it happens before the intended start date of the European Championships, it is not certain that the European Championships are carried out as planned.

Want to prioritize domestic football

"It is most important that domestic competitions can be completed this season, to reduce the negative impact on the ecosystem of football," the European league organization said in a statement quoted by Reuters.

Should the leagues not be completed, there are question marks about which teams qualify for the Champions League and Europa League next season, as well as up and down relegation in the leagues.

It is Uefa's executive committee that, after the crisis meeting, decides to postpone the European Championships. Lars-Christer Olsson sits there and is also chairman of the European league organization.

- Another time this year (for the European Championships) is probably what would probably be easiest, to push things ahead, says the Swede in an interview with Radio Sports.

It fits in with Saturday's data from The Telegraph, which says that Uefa is considering moving the European Championships to December this year.

- There has been speculation after an article in L'Équipe that one should postpone the European Championships to 2021, but it is a much larger apparatus. That would be theoretically possible of course, but it would have a "knock-on effect" on lots of other activities, says Olsson.

Can collide with the ladies' European Championship

The news agency AP has information that a move of the men's European Championship to 2021 could also mean that the women's European Championship, which will be played in England then, can be moved up one year. But Lars-Christer Olsson does not see it as likely.

- I do not think this is a current scenario and do not see why one would do it, he says to Radio Sports.

On the other hand, Olsson expects Fifa's new expanded version of the club's World Cup, which is also scheduled for the summer of 2021, to move in that case.

- I don't see a scenario where Fifa would take that crap, it would be a screaming cry among fans in Europe, says the blue-yellow football pitcher to Radio Sports.
