The A-World Cup would be played in Halifax, Canada, and the B-World Championships in Angers, France, but because of the fear of spreading corona, the championships are canceled. The decision was made during a telephone conference on Saturday, Yle reports.

Canada has so far 51 confirmed cases of COVID-19 but according to Kalervo Municipality it is about taking the safe for the uncertain.

"At the moment there should be no very serious situation in Canada with the corona virus, more they even deal with a fear that everything will get worse," he tells Yle.

The news comes as a disappointment to the ladies' union captain Pasi Mustonen.

- An incredible disappointment, this is what we work for all year. It is clear that you had bad feelings, but at the same time it was so close and IIHF had not announced anything, he tells Yle.
