Concerns about the spread of the corona virus stop many sports events around the world. Now the question is whether the ice hockey World Cup in Switzerland is at risk.

- We have close contact with the organizer to analyze the situation. We wait until March 15 to see how this pandemic develops, after which we can say more, says International Ice Hockey Association (IIHF) chairman René Fasel to Blick.

- The union's medical commission is meeting in Budapest right now, and they will probably decide in a first step that all international tournaments in March, as well as all U18 tournaments, will be canceled, he continues.

In such cases, this means that the U18 World Cup, which will be decided in the USA on April 16-26, should be canceled.

Fasel says that a political decision must be made to cancel the World Cup in Switzerland for medical reasons, "not least because of financial and insurance issues".

But letting the World Cup decide against empty stands, just as the Swiss league has done in recent rounds, he does not see as meaningful.
