The International Federation (FIA) issued its first verdict on the Dual Axis System (DAS) on Friday, the innovative Mercedes system that allows the steering wheel angle to be controlled from the steering wheel. Michael Masi, Formula 1 race director and FIA spokesman, appeared in Montmeló to clarify that the revolutionary element can be applied during the 2020 World Cup, although not later.
"The most important thing for the FIA is security. So if doubts arise, be assured that it is our top priority," Masi revealed to confirm the legality of the Silver Arrows device.
However, the successor of Charlie Whiting was much more skeptical about the possibilities of DAS from 2021, when a new regulation very different from that of recent years comes into force. "We will see where the equipment can reach within the limits of the 2021 regulation," Masi slipped.
The norms for 2021, approved last December, are much more precise in the sense that affects DAS. Thus, article 10.5 of the new regulation stipulates that "the alignment" of the front wheels "should only be done with a single type of steering wheel rotation".
