The Spanish sailors Támara Echegoyen and Paula Barceló have proclaimed this Saturday 49th FX world champions on the last day of the 49er FX, 49er and Nacra 17 World Championships, which have been held in Geelong (Australia), while Diego Botín and Iago López Marra have hung the silver medal in 49er.

In a day with winds of up to 20 knots and in which two fleet races were held for each class before the Medal Race, the crew formed by the sailors Movistar Echegoyen and Barceló resisted the pressure of reaching the final race in the first position just one point from the British Dobson and Tidey. The Galician and the Balearic remained ahead in the last section of the test, in which the British overturned. In this way, Echegoyen thus adds its second world title - after the one achieved in Clearwater (United States) in 2016 - while Barceló opens as champion.

On the other hand, the Gran Canaria Canary Patricia Cantero and Madrid's Nicole van der Velden (Profand Group) failed to reach the Medal Race and finished the day with a 2-1 that allowed them to ascend from the 24th to the 14th position.

Echegoyen stressed that it has been "a super-close championship." "We have had to do our best. We must congratulate the English crew of Charlote and Saskia, who have done a formidable job and until the last moment we did not know who would win. I want to take the opportunity to to thank our great team, because this would not have been possible without all of them, "he said. Paula Barceló showed the same emotion after the victory. "Thank you very much for all the support received from home, for all the team behind us and that has taken care of us this week. We are very happy to continue working," he said.

Silver for loot and López Marra

In 49er, the Cantabrian Diego Botín and the Galician Iago López Marra (Quirón Salud) rose from third to second place before the Medal Race, where they fought with Austrians and Germans for the silver medal, which finally hung up. Botín highlighted his joy for the second position, only behind the New Zealanders Peter Burling and Blair Tuke. "We are very, very happy. It is the best result we have had since Iago and I navigated together and the most important title we have achieved; it also gives us great confidence about the work we have been doing and our performance towards the Games Tokyo Olympics, "he said.

Meanwhile, López Marra said the race had been "incredible." "Our best result and in the Olympic year, with all the crews at full capacity, just a few months after the Olympic Games. Now we have to continue working hard, we will train with the German team - with which we have a great relationship - and with which we make a good tandem to train at the highest level, "he said.

The Nacra 17 were responsible for premiering the finals, and before the Gran Canaria Tara Pacheco and Barcelona Florian Trittel achieved a quarter and a fifth place in the last fleet races. In the Medal Race, finally, they signed a sixth that earned them to qualify in sixth position of the general. Gold went to the British John Gimson and Anna Burnet.
