The Dutch handball players play the European Championship qualifying match with Spain at the end of next month in their own country for a record number of spectators. Ahoy in Rotterdam is sold out with ten thousand fans.
"A record number of fans in the stands watching the replay of the World Cup final, that is a wonderful handball poster. Associations go to Ahoy with buses full and fans come from all over the country," said the proud general manager Sjors Röttger of the Dutch handball association.
In December, the Dutch team, led by national team coach Emmanuel Mayonnade, became the world champion for the first time by beating Spain in a nerve-racking final. Lois Abbingh made the winning goal in the final seconds.
The Netherlands and Spain will meet each other in the European Championship qualification first on Wednesday, March 25 in Málaga. Both teams then come into action for the first time since the World Cup final. Four days later the competition in Ahoy follows.
The Dutch started the European Championship qualifying series in September and October last year with victories over Austria (32-24) and Greece (43-18). Spain also beat those countries. The numbers one and two of the group go to the European Championship at the end of this year in Norway and Denmark.
