In his second Grand Slam start in his career, Mikael Ymer easily moved on from the first round. In the second, he pressed Russian Karen Chatjanov, who is trained by Ymer's former coach Fredrik Rosengren.

The match lasted for over 4.5 hours and included 20 broken servgem. 21-year-old Ymer was ill out in the fifth set but managed to break Chatjanov's serve at sub-3-5. However, he failed to seize the opportunity to serve the set and match home and then fell into a steady tiebreak. After taking the lead with 8-6 in tiebreak, Ymer lost four straight balls and thus the match.

The 21-year-old had never defeated such a high-ranking player as Chatjanov and was two points from victory.

Mikael Ymer, who went out in the second round of the French Open last year, was the last Swedish eliminated from the Australian Open. Ymer's two previous professional matches that went to five sets he has won.
