Ajax will start the home game with Spakenburg in the eighth finals of the TOTO KNVB Cup on Wednesday evening with a significantly changed basic eleven. Bruno Varela, Edson Álvarez, Razvan Marin, Carel Eiting and Siem de Jong are at the kick-off.
In the previous cup match against Telstar (3-4 win), André Onana defended the goal of Ajax, but the Cameroonian keeper now gets a rest from coach Erik ten Hag. This also applies to Noussair Mazraoui, Joël Veltman, Donny van de Beek and Quincy Promes, among others.
As a result, there are base spots for right back Sergiño Dest and Álvarez, which is at the center of defense. The Mexican was used primarily as a midfielder earlier this season. Lisandro Martínez and Nicolás Tagliafico are just in the base.
The midfield of Ajax has changed completely compared to the home game with Sparta Rotterdam last Sunday (2-1 win). Hakim Ziyech is injured and Van de Beek and Ryan Gravenberch are sitting on the couch, allowing Eiting, Marin and De Jong to prove themselves.
At the forefront there is once again a base spot for Ryan Babel, who has returned this winter to Ajax, who starts on the flank. Lassina Traoré starts in the striker and that means that Dusan Tadic moves on to the wing.
The match between Ajax and Spakenburg starts at 8.45 pm in a sold-out Johan Cruijff ArenA and is led by referee Richard Martens.
Ajax setup: Varela; Dest, Alvarez, Martinez, Tagliafico; Eiting, Marin, De Jong; Tadic, Traoré, Babel.
