Certainly nothing is going well for the French at the start of the Australian Open. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 33rd in the world, was forced to retire in the first round of the Australian Open against Australian Alexei Popyrin (96th) due to recurring back pain on Tuesday in Melbourne.

The 34-year-old Frenchman did not resume play at the side change after the loss of the third set. Popyrin led 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, 6-1. "As soon as I push, I take a chestnut," he explained on the court to the physiotherapist of the tournament, which happens to be that of the French team of Davis Cup.

It was then the tournament doctor's turn to come and hear from the French. The latter then explained to him that he had received injections before the match as well as anti-inflammatories and paracetamol. The doc could not give him anything more, so Tsonga finally threw in the towel. In men, all (skinny) hopes now rest on Gaël Monfils.
