It's confirmed ! The animal crossed by a driver near the town of Gurat in Charente is a wolf. "The French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) was able to authenticate this observation as being that of a gray wolf (canis lupus lupus)," said the prefecture in a statement on Tuesday.

Monday morning, a mother had taken photos and even a video of the animal, in particular crossing a small country road. It is the first time since September 19, 1926 that the wolf is seen in the department specifies the Charente Libre which revealed the images.

The same as in Charente-Maritime in November?

The authorities add that “the species is known for its great dispersal capacity. Since its reappearance in the Southern Alps in 1992, the wolf has roamed territories as distant as the Pyrenees, Lorraine, Burgundy, or even the Somme. In New Aquitaine, the presence of the gray wolf was proven in Dordogne in 2015, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques in in 2018 and 2019, and more recently, mid-November 2019, in the southwest of Charente-Maritime ”.
