Alxander Ovetjkin had a nice Saturday in New York. Away against the Islanders, he gave Washington the lead just over halfway into the first period, played by his Swedish radar partner Nicklas Bäckström. The goal was his 690th NHL career, a touchdown by Mario Lemiuex - which took him to tenth place in NHL history.

But that wasn't enough. After the Islanders went up 4-1 in the second period, Washington generally, and Ovechkin in particular, went up in the third period.

Closed in open box

First, after Carl Hagelin reduced to 1-4, the Russians broke in front of goals in typical Ovetjkin manner and fought in 2-4.

And then, after another three Washinton goals, he ended the evening by putting 6–4 in the open box from the middle zone. That goal was his 692nd in the NHL career, a touch of Steve Yzerman's listing.

26th hat-trick

Thus, he is the ninth best in the NHL's history. He was also noted for his 26th NHL hattrick.

Up to the best NHL goalscorer of all time, however, he has some distance left. Wayne Gretzky accounted for 894 goals, 202 more than Ovetjkin has right now.
