Worcester’s second-line surgery, New Zealand’s Michael Fatialofa, injured in the neck on Saturday during a game against the Saracens, “was a success,” his wife said on Instagram on Tuesday. The 27-year-old rugby player had stayed on the ground after touchdown when he came in a minute earlier when his team (62-5) lost to the defending European and English champion.

He had received medical care on the lawn for about ten minutes before being evacuated by stretcher and ambulance to a London hospital. The player, who complained of a loss of power and sensitivity in his limbs, was placed in the intensive care unit. His Worcester Warriors club announced on Monday that he would be operated on in the evening "to relieve the pressure caused by the bruise (on his spinal cord) and help restore his functions."

Michael Fatialofa will undergo surgery tonight as he remains in St Mary's Hospital in London.

We continue to thank everyone for their outpouring of support 🙏 # PrayForFats
