• Market: The sale of cars falls 4.8% and confirms the worst possible scenario
  • Europe 60% of cars, more expensive with the new WLTP
  • Industry.World deceleration of car sales until 2021

Enrollment of passenger cars and SUVs in Spain fell in 2019 for the first time since 2012, 4.8% compared to the previous year, but there are generalist brands (such as Seat ) that resist the decline in the market better than others, and best-selling models (like the Seat Leon ) that maintain an enviable health even in the last years of life of its current generation.

Seat was the brand that sold the most cars in 2019, with 111,982 units , ahead of Peugeot (97,939 deliveries) and Volkswagen (94,328), according to data from industry associations. Far from decreasing sales last year, the Spanish company registered a 4.34% increase compared to the previous year, when it was also the best selling brand in Spain.

Seat's leadership in 2019 is largely due to the undoubted commercial success of three models: the Seat León , Ibiza and Arona , which have finished the year among the seven best-selling cars in our country. Among the three, there are 86,114 units registered in 2019, representing 77% of the brand's total sales in Spain. The Ateca (the Seat compact SUV) was the fourth best-selling model of the Spanish brand last year, with 17,183 units sold in our market.

But let's stop at the Seat León, the absolute market leader with 35,849 units sold in 2019, 2.72% more than in 2018. The popular compact of the Spanish brand, whose fourth generation will be presented on January 28 at the Martorell factory, was the best-selling model of the year for the fifth time in a row since 2015. And in 2014 it was second only a short distance from the Renault Mégane .

Practically since the second year of León III's life (it was put on sale at the end of 2012), the third generation of the Spanish best seller has had no rival in our country thanks to an excellent price-product ratio and an attractive image in all its versions body that has seduced Spanish drivers in recent years.

Well, in reality yes, the Leon III has had a worthy rival all this time: the Ibiza - another 'bestseller' of Seat-, which has made it the competition from within the own brand and has disputed the first position of the ranking of sales from 2015 to 2018. In 2017 the utility remained just 1,500 units of its 'older brother', although in 2019 it has not been able to maintain the pulse and has fallen to sixth place with 25,134 enrollments, almost the same as the Arona (the small one of the SUV range).

El León has been a market leader in 2019 for nine uninterrupted months , since he took first place in April. In addition, the 35,849 units sold until December 31 is the best data of the decade for the Spanish compact and are 1,000 vehicles more than those sold in the same period of 2018. We must go back to the years before the 2008 crisis to Find such high sales figures for a tourism.

Sandero and Qashqai, on the podium

The Leon has surpassed the Dacia Sandero by almost 2,000 units, a more economical model that has been climbing positions year after year in the ranking of the best-selling cars in Spain to sneak for the first time on the bestseller podium. From January to December 2019, 33,882 units of the Romanian brand utility were sold in Spain, 8.83% more than in 2018,

The Nissan Qashqai , another model that has been climbing positions in the preferences of Spanish customers to become a regular on the best-selling car lists, completes the podium. The Japanese SUV, also in the last year of the current generation, repeated in third place on the podium with 30,162 units delivered, 3.61% less than in 2018.

The list of the 10 best-selling cars in the national territory last year is completed by the Renault Clio , with 25,538 units, 11.51% less; the Renault Mégane , with 25,403 units, 12.65% less; the Seat Ibiza , with 25,134 units, 19.98% less; the Seat Arona , with 25,131 units, 29.34% more; the Volkswagen Golf , with 24,329 units, 10.19% less; the Peugeot 3008 , with 23,308 units, 1.92% more, and the Opel Corsa , with 22,352 units, 2.15% less.
