French star Karim Benzema and Real Madrid have reached an agreement to extend the player's contract an additional year until the summer of 2022.

The agreement - which will be accompanied by the French international's salary increase - will be formally signed next summer and will extend the current player's contract that ends in 2021.

Benzema, aged 32 and up to 34 years at the end of the extended contract with the riyal, is not seeking a longer-term contract with the team, and he wants to take things step by step.

Real Madrid considers Benzema - who joined the team from Lyon in 2009 - one of the most prominent elements of the team this season thanks to his performance and goals that have reached 12 in the League and occupies second place in the list of scoring goals in La Liga, one goal behind Barcelona's Lionel Messi.

It is noteworthy that the relationship between Benzema and the royal team is "exceptional" especially with club president Florentino Perez, who appreciates the number "9".
