The outgoing, and by many detested, American Colby Covington has for months devoted himself to "trash talk" against UFC champion in welterweight (77.1 kilos) Kamaru Usman of Nigeria.

But in tonight's title match at the big UFC 245 in Las Vegas, it was Usman who got the last word.

With only 50 seconds left of the match, 4.10 into the fifth round, Usman won via technical knockout and defended his master's belt for the first time.

- I've heard all week, all month, ever since the feud became official that "Colby is in the head of Kamaru, the emotions will take over". But let me tell you all that the reason I am the best in the world is that I am mentally stronger than everyone else in this weight class, says Usman.

After the third round, Covington told his ringing corner that he thought the jaw was broken. After the match he was taken to hospital.

Holloway lost the belt

Two other title matches were decided on the same gala. First, the world's foremost female MMA fighter, Brazilian Amanda Nunes, defended her bantamweight champion belt (61.2 kilos). She defeated challenger Germaine de Randamie on points after five rounds (49-44, 49-46, 49-45).

- Honestly, I felt a little off today, but as a champion I always have a plan A, B and C, she says.

Star Max Holloway lost his champion belt in featherweight after losing to Australia's Alexander Volkanovski. The previously so dominant champion fell on points after five rounds (45-50, 47-48, 47-48).

The loss was Holloway's first in the weight class since meeting with Conor McGregor in 2013. Since then, he had lined up 14 straight wins.

- I'm only 28 years old. I'll be back, he noted afterwards.

Earlier at the same gala, Swedish lost Daniel Teymur via knockout in the first round.
