A few weeks have passed since Akim Aliu testified about racist and violent behavior from Calgary's former head coach Bill Peters. Since then, several players have come forward with similar stories from several coaches around the league.

After a moment's silence on the subject, Gary Bettman, the NHL's chief of staff, stepped up tonight in front of a united press force to give his view of the events.

"Our message is unequivocal, we will not tolerate abuse in any form," Bettman said, continuing.

- The world is changing for the better. This is an opportunity and a moment for positive change and this development should be expected.

Launched a four-point plan

Bettman announced that the league is planning to launch a four-point plan to curb the harmful behaviors found in the NHL. Among other things, an anonymous helpline for players and team leaders should be started, to report inappropriate behavior. Bettman also said that they will punish teams that allow abuse to go unreported.

Akim Aliu, who previously noted racist and violent behavior from former Calgary coach Bill Peters, commented on the league's message on social media,

"Now the tough work is beginning to focus on the details and implement policies that will make this sport safer, give it greater diversity and demand greater responsibility."
