Henrik Stenson did most of the right during the third round of the Hero World Challenge, the invitation competition with 18 of the world's best players in the field.

After birdies at holes 3, 9, 13, 15 and 17, Stenson came to the final knockout in the lead. But then he made one of the few big mistakes during the round. Stenson sent the shot into a bunker and then failed to reach the green from there.

Today's only bogey ended the round, but after the scores 69-67-68, Henrik Stenson is 12 under par and very much in the fight for victory. American Gary Woodland, who finished with two straight birdies, is one stroke ahead of Stenson.

Won by 2017

In fact, Stenson has "just" won a competition since the historic British Open in the British Open 2016. That victory came in the Wyndham Championship in August 2017.

If the 43-year-old is to win now, he needs to defeat a couple of really high-class players. Because it's tight at the top - just a beat behind Stenson, there is a real star trio in the form of Justin Thomas, Jon Rahm and the competition's host Tiger Woods.

Reed in trouble

Patrick Reed, who was the lone leader after two rounds, is the sixth player to have a reasonable chance of taking home the victory. But Reed really didn't win any new admirers in the third round. In the 11th hole, Reed was in a difficult position in the sand when a television camera captured how the American, with two test turns, improved his position - seemingly fully conscious - by swinging away sand behind the ball.

Shortly after the round, Golf Central announced that Patrick Reed would be penalized with two strokes and he is therefore 10 under par for the final round.

The competition, which is the final of the year for Henrik Stenson, is not fully counted as an official competition on the PGA Tour. But there are still big prize money and many points on the world ranking to record in the Bahamas.
