The young Danish Mathias Norsgaard , of the Spanish Movistar team, has suffered a double fracture of the tibia when hit by a car while training in Girona, according to the cyclist himself told Danish television TV2.

Norsgaard, 22, one of Movistar's young signings for the 2020 campaign after the departures of Nairo Quintana and Mikel Landa , will have to be six months off after being operated before being able to debut with the Spanish team.

The Danish runner won the first stage of the Tour del Porvenir this year and finished fourth in the U23 World Cup time trial (United Kingdom).

"My preparation was going really well and I was looking forward to starting with the team. Now everything has gone to waste. Fortunately, I have two years of contract with Movistar, but breaking my leg is the worst start I could have," he told TV2 Denmark.

The accident, he said, occurred when a car hit him when he entered a parking lot and the Danish racer, who was finishing his training session in Girona, crashed into a lamppost. "I could not do anything. I crashed into the car and went against the lamppost. If it had not been for the pole the injuries would have been minor, since in the rest of the body I have nothing," he explained.

Norsgaard was transferred to a hospital in Girona, but it has not yet been decided whether he will be operated in Spain or will return to Denmark to be treated there.
