When the European Championship semi-final of 100 meters breaststroke was over, Swedish Erik Persson was able to note two things.

The first was that he had beaten his own trial time of 58.49. But despite swimming at 58.08 in the semi-finals, he was never really close.

New European record

The final final spot instead took the Danish Tobias Bjerg, who hit the tile at 57.14. However, the limelight in Glasgow did not end in either a Swedish or a Danish.

Instead, it was Belarusian Ilya Shymanovich who caught everyone's eyes as he swept past everyone and thumped a new European record.

The new record time of 200 meters breaststroke is thus 55.89.
