Algerian trio Riad Mehrez, Ismail Ben Nasser and Youssef Blili will compete with Egyptian Mohamed Salah, Moroccan Hakim Ziach and Senegal's Sadio Mani for the African Footballer of the Year awards, after the shortlist was announced on Wednesday.

Mehrez, who won the 2016 Manchester City award, and Ben Nasser and Blailly contributed to Algeria's crowning of this year's African Cup of Nations in Egypt, after a 29-year absence.

Liverpool striker Salah has retained the African Player of the Year award for 2017 and 2018 and is again in fierce competition with team mate Mani, who reached the final of the African Cup of Nations. They won the Champions League and European Super Cup this year with the English team.

Ajax Amsterdam's Hakim Ziach, Napoli's Senegalese defender Calido Coulibaly, Gabon's Arsenal striker Pierre Emeric Aubameyang, Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana and Shanghai Shenhua's Nigerian striker Odeon Igalo are also on the list.

Saudi Arabia's Al-Ahly and Esperance are also competing for another award for best player in continental club competitions.

He won the CAF Champions League title with Esperance for the second year in a row, competing with his former teammates Anis El Badri and Taha Yassin El Khanissi alongside Egypt's African Cup winner Tarek Hamed with Zamalek, and UAE striker Kodjo Fu Laba and former Moroccan club Berkane.

Notable awards
Djamel Belmadi appears to be the favorite to win the coach of the year award after leading Algeria to the African Nations Cup title, and Senegal coach Aliou Cissi, who lost to him in the final.

Esperance coach Mueen Chaabani won the Champions League in the last two editions, Swiss Confederation Cup champion Christian Gross with Zamalek and Madagascar's Nicolas Dupuis.

Morocco's Achraf Hakimi, the back of Borussia Dortmund, is looking to retain the Young Player of the Year award.

Algeria tops the nominees for the team of the year award, along with Madagascar, Tunisia, Nigeria and Senegal.

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in the Egyptian coastal city of Hurghada on January 7.
