Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk deserves the Golden Ball award for the best player in the world.

Argentine striker Lionel Messi was crowned Barcelona's top player of the year by France Football magazine on Monday.

Messi has won the record with six trophies, outperforming Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo, who has won the award five times.

Van Dyck came in second, Ronaldo in third and Liverpool striker Sadio Mane in fourth.

"Messi is the best player I've ever seen," Klopp said in a statement on Tuesday. "I've said it 5,000 times before, but Van Dyck also deserves the Ballon d'Or after his excellent season with Liverpool."

"I don't remember any player who did better than Van Dyke on the defensive, so he also deserves the Golden Ball."

Fabio Cannavaro was the last defender to win the Ballon d'Or for the 2006 World Player of the Year after helping Italy win the World Cup.

The attackers then took control of the prize. Ronaldo was crowned five times and third in a vote on Monday.

Van Dijk reinforced Liverpool's line and helped them win the Champions League last season and helped the Netherlands qualify for the final of the Nations Cup.
European lost to Portugal.

In August, he became the first defender to win the European Footballer of the Year award.
